PSSM Talks Injury Prevention with YMS Coaches

Passionate.  Enthused.  Absolutely over the top psyched!! These are some ways to describe the way kids feel about sports, and being part of a team.  There is no greater joy in childhood that being able to go out with your friends and play ball.  As we get older, the game may get more serious but we never really lose that excitement that we had as kids.  Every kid should have the opportunity to feel that way, which is why participation in school and community sports is a key part of a healthy lifestyle.  Sports provide exercise, social development and above all character building for the young people in our community.

Because sports participation is such a key part of healthy development, injuries that prevent kids from playing with their team can be devastating to them.  Keeping children healthy and active is something that we at Performance Spine are very passionate about, and we think that prevention plays a crucial role in the management of young athletes.

chiropractor lawrenceville PSSM Talks Injury Prevention with YMS Coaches

To allow us to provide superior injury prevention services, we have invested in technologies that allow us to assess young athletes in remarkable ways.  In addition to ImPACT testing for concussion management, we are able to use a system called Optogait to evaluate the way young players move.  Optogait lets us measure the way kids run, jump and land.  We can determine their reaction time, strength, power and speed, and we can compare one side of their body to the other which helps us to identify imbalances that can lead to injuries.  We can also use this technology to do baseline testing at the beginning of the season, so that if kids do get hurt, we know exactly when it is safe for them to get back out on the field.  Technology like this takes all of the guesswork out of knowing when kids are ready to play, which gives both their parents and our doctors peace of mind.

On February 20th, a few members of the PSSM team had an opportunity to visit with the coaches of the YMS youth soccer program.  Our Director of Sports Performance, Matt Shade, ATC, MEd. , shared valuable information regarding the technology that is available to keep young athletes safe, healthy, and at the top of their game.  With the help of Justin Mallett, a Performance Spine rehab aide and fitness enthusiast, Matt was able to demonstrate the ease with which Optogait allows us to evaluate athletes to identify their strengths as well as areas needing improvement for optimal performance.

We at Performance Spine are very excited about our community partnership with YMS.  We believe that supporting athletic organizations like YMS is an important part of building a stronger community.  Our CEO, Percy Naranjo, was pleased to present YMS with a check for $12,000 to provide uniforms for the athletes and to support the scholarship program so that more kids can have the chance to participate.  We look forward to continually growing and developing relationships with groups like YMS so that we can keep more kids happy, healthy and out on the ball field with their friends!

For more information or to schedule an ImPACT or Optogait assessment, please call 215-504-2223 or email pssmpa@gmail.com.  We are conveniently located in Newtown, PA right off of the Newtown Bypass and about 1.5 miles from exit 49 on I95.  We serve the Bucks County area including Newtown, Yardley, Makefield, Richboro, Langhorne and Levittown.

Physical Therapists and Orthopedic doctors in Newtown, PA work together to Prevent Back Pain

This article is especially important for women that wear high heels. High Heels can cause back pain, and chronically weak buttock or glute muscles (aka, Lazy Butt Syndrome) can put anyone at risk for back pain.

Dr. Joseph Jimenez gives a brief lecture explaining this concept:

As Dr. Jimenez mentions, Step #1 to Curing the Lazy Butt Syndrome is to maintain hip flexibility

For example, This Hip Flexor stretch is very important in maintaining hip flexibility

While one knee is kneeling on a towel or soft cushion, the other leg is bent forward in front of you. Keep your abdominal muscles in a contracted position while you slowly move forward and stretching the hip. Hold the stretch for a count of 3-5 seconds before returning to starting position. This exercise can be done with each hip. Start with one set of 5 -7 reps and increase to 2 sets.

Doctor Becomes Patient: Healthy Things My Wife Got Me to Eat – Part I

I began this blog telling my story of how a combined ACL and MCL injury led me to surgery and recovery.  Coming back from a severe sports injury, I’d like to say it gave me an entirely renewed focus on always eating right and exercising 7 days a week.  But you and I both know that’s a bit exaggerated.  Much of my success in recovery is due to my wife, who is a registered dietician, mother of four wonderful kids, and director of meal planning for the Hsu household.  Remember, healing is not just achieved through exercise; giving your body the ingredients for rebuilding strong tissues is another key component.

As we discussed in prior posts, in talking about the benefits of exercise and the epidemic of obesity in our nation, increasing energy output and making wise food choices are both important factors in promoting healthy living.

So here are a few of the favorite things my wife (J) has gotten me to eat:

Bob’s Red Mill gluten free brownies – Brownies come first on my list because I like dessert.  Have you ever gone to a restaurant and just ordered dessert?  I have.  These have a softer texture than regular brownies, not in a necessarily bad way so they don’t hold their shape as well, but the cocoa used in it is from Ghirardelli and makes for a deep intense chocolate flavor.

J: For full disclosure, these contain beans. J But the beans are what give them higher protein content and higher fiber content, all without sacrificing taste.  Don’t worry, you can’t taste them!

Amazing grass energy bars – This is a great source of protein and phytonutrients on the go!

J: Just wanted to add that they come in chocolate and chocolate peanut butter, which makes eating healthier that much easier. But they also come in berry and original, for those that don’t prefer chocolate.

Non hydrogenated peanut butter – One of the toughest things I’ve had to give up has been my peanut butter.  I grew up a Skippy and Jif kid.  I could (if I could get away with it) probably eat a jar every other week.  The kind that separates isn’t the same.  It’s usually not as sweet or salty as I was used to, but it’s good for me. (sigh)

J: A good midway point on your way to a non-hydrogenated PB is something like Skippy Natural. They contain palm oil, typically,  along with peanut butter to help prevent separation. Yes, palm oil is a saturated fat, but it’s actually healthier than hydrogenated fats.

More favorites to come in Part II….(to be continued)

Doctor Becomes Patient: Back to the Bike- Part 2, Obesity

Personally, I love to eat (Just being honest). In fact, one of the main reasons I cycle is to offset the calories I ingest. Granted, there are many other good reasons to exercise including improving stress, heart health, improved glycemic control in diabetics, improved cholesterol profile, and others which we will discuss in future blogs. For today, however, let’s focus on energy in versus energy out.
It is now estimated that more than 75% of our US population is overweight, obese, or severely obese. Overweight is defined as a Body Mass Index (BMI) > 25. Obesity is BMI > 30. Morbid obesity is BMI > 40. BMI is calculated by the following: body weight (in kg)/height (in meters) squared. For your reference, a calculator for BMI can be found at the CDC website. http://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/assessing/bmi/adult_bmi/english_bmi_calculator/bmi_calculator.html

There are two main reasons why this is occurring” (1) Eating more than we are expending, and (2) not expending enough energy. The word “calorie” represents a unit of energy. Therefore if we look at a nutrition label and see that a meal at a fast food restaurant will give me 1400 calories (burger, fries, and soda included), then if we use a very rough estimate of a 2000/day caloric requirement, then we are left very little wiggle room for the remainder of that days meals.

One can therefore see how easy it is to exceed the caloric requirement. What happens is that the body will store this excess energy in fat cells, thinking it might be utilized for a future time when food is scarce. The problem is, food is never scarce in this part of the world. One could argue, in fact, that even with the price of food increasing, one thing that remains quite affordable to the masses is fast food.

Other than eating healthier diets, the other main factor is also very much under our control: increasing energy expenditure (“BURNING CALORIES”). Think of it this way. Today, you could buy a Ford Fiesta, a compact automobile, which has a 1.6 Liter engine, and will get you 33 miles per gallon combined. On the other hand, you could buy a Mercedes CL600, another compact automobile, which has a 5.5 Liter engine, and you will get 14 miles per gallon. In this example, having a larger engine burns more energy (fuel).

If you translate this into humans it means that if you expend more energy than you eat/drink, then you will lose weight. It also means that exercising and gaining muscle strength will increase the rate at which you burn energy – even at rest! (i.e. turn your body into a “larger engine”)

Here are some thoughts for today. Ask yourself these questions: (1) Which exercises do I enjoy? (2) What exercises do I perform regularly? (3) How much do I walk a day?
Consider increasing your energy expenditure today! Like most people, perhaps your job is sedentary, not requiring many steps. Some tips for the week:
1. Park in the farthest parking spot.
2. During lunch or after work, take a brisk walk 30 minutes in duration, 5 days this week.
3. It’s okay if you miss 5 days. Let’s say you walked only two out of 7 days. Don’t get down on yourself. If you used to walk zero days, at least you have made progress! Build up to 5 days a week. You can get there. Ask someone to keep you accountable. Talk to your doctor about your plan.
